How to Find the Right Coach for YOU!
Ready to embark on a life changing journey through coaching? You are making an empowered decision that will create far reaching ripples in every corner of your life.
Now that you have made this decision, its time to take the first step - determining exactly which coach best fits your needs.
How do you do that? I'm so glad you asked!
You must first get very, very specific about the type of coach you are looking for, as there are literally hundreds of coaching niches out there.
Think you already know what kind of coach you are looking for? Think again!
Let's use an example from my personal coaching experience……because dating and relationship coaches are plentiful - do you need one who focuses on 20 somethings who are looking for an alternative to the bar scene? Or a coach who specializes in over 40 divorcees who are ready to jump back into the dating pool?
These are very different niches within a larger field of coaching, and will consist of varied coaching skills, practices, and experiences.
More often than not, a coach will specialize in an area that they have extensive personal experience in, and are able to connect to you as the client for that reason. This makes getting aligned with your inner values, dreams, and desire in order to narrow down your ideal coach niche even more important.
Let's look at some common coaching niches, along with their more specialized areas of focus....
Common Coaching Areas —> Niche
Dating Coach ---> Recently Divorced/Widowed etc wanting to get back into dating scene
Dating Coach ---> Career woman looking for marriage
Relationship Coach ---> Getting past childhood trauma in order to create a healthy, fulfilling relationship
Relationship Coach ---> Currently in a relationship that needs strengthening
Career Coach ---> Mid or Exec level professional looking to take it to the next level in their current field
Career Coach ---> Mid or Exec level professional looking to transition into another field
Career Coach ---> Stay at home mom looking to re-enter the working world
Business Coach ---> Female entrepreneur just starting out
Business Coach ---> Established "Solopreneur" looking to scale an existing small business
Wellness Coach ---> Promoting health through a vegan lifestyle
Wellness Coach ---> Holistic health through healthy foods, meditation, and chakra alignment
Financial Coaching ---> Just starting out with little to no savings or investment, want to increase income
Financial Coaching ---> Investment and Retirement planning
Life Skills Coach ---> Work Life Balance, Assertiveness, Communication, Self confidence etc....
This list could go on and on........ hopefully by reading the few that I included you realize how important it is to become aligned with your values, dreams, and desires in order to find the coach that is right for you. To get started let’s complete the following statement:
I am a ___________, ____________, ____________ woman, who is looking for a coach that will help me achieve my desire of ______________ & ____________________ by allowing me to ________________________ & by NOT allowing me to ___________________________. I am committed to taking this first step towards my dream of _________________________________.
Now that you have created an action statement which defines your values, desires, and dreams AND your ideal coach - its time to find them! The next step is pretty simple, just google a few relevant search terms and browse the websites that spark your interest, noting on each:
The coaches specific niche and "ideal client" - do you feel as if they are talking to YOU?!
The coaches experiences and relevant certifications. Is an ICF certification important to you? Or an advanced degree? Make note of each.
Program/Product Offerings - Do they offer 1:1 or group only? Are new clients taken on an ongoing basis, or is enrollment limited? Any digital products available for purchase?
TESTIMONIALS! This is my favorite part of each prospective coaches website, the more detailed the better!
While on the Discovery Call with my very first personal coach I was hesitant about spending so much money on a coach, so I asked if any of her past clients would be willing to speak with me. She contacted 3 and lined up calls for the next day, after speaking with each of them I knew I needed to sign up like yesterday!
Typically at least 2-3 coaches will spark your interest and offer packages & products that seem to be tailor made for you! Now would be the time to compare the offerings of each coach, keeping in mind what style of coaching is most appealing to you. I have done 1:1 programs, groups, and purchased pre-recorded group coaching at deeply discounted rates, and have gained valuable experiences and insights from each one of them!
As a general rule, 1:1 coaching tends to be more expensive - but is well worth the extra cost! Each session is focused solely on you, and allows you to build a meaningful relationship with your coach. Additionally, you may feel more comfortable discussing personal topics in a 1:1 setting. Many 1:1 programs offer weekly content & homework that will amplify the weekly coaching conversations.
Group coaching is very valuable and often times much more affordable! I am currently a member of several coaching groups and look forward to the weekly calls for both the coaching and camaraderie. In addition the calls are usually recorded so that you can listen at a later date for reinforcement or if you have to miss a call.
Now that you have completed your comparison of potential coaches, its time to book the Consultation Call!
This may be referred to as a Discovery Call, Clarity Call, or Complimentary Coaching Session - but at the end of the day it is your opportunity to see if the potential coach "gets" you and your dreams, and can clearly communicate how he/she can help you get there.
Prior to getting on the call it is important to be clear on how much you are ready to invest in your coaching experience, beyond a dollar amount.
Will you make the time in your schedule to complete any lessons or "homework" before or after each call?
Are you ready to be open and vulnerable with someone, and come face to face with some perhaps scary topics?
If the answer is YES then you are on the path to creating the life of your dreams!
I would LOVE to hear your thoughts on this and any experiences that you have!
I've been very strategic in choosing who I hire as a coach & it has paid off exponentially. Although I have been fortunate not everyone has, several clients have shared with me their own experiences of working with coaches who were either not a good fit for them or not an ethical coach at all.
Let me know if you have used any of the strategies above in finding & hiring your own coach - or any horror stories from NOT using them!
Know you want more out of life but don’t know where to start? I’ve been there - overworked. stressed out, still broke, and wondering if this was going to be the rest of my life.
It doesn’t have to be.
I made a life changing decision 2 years ago when I signed up with my first coach - and I haven’t looked back since. My life changed so much that even my (now ex) boss noticed….. and then I quit!
